1:
haven’t found
2: This
marker indicates that this valley is where they spend several day
gathering cattle and supplies for the journey. Some of these old
fence lines and corral could still be from that era, if allowed by
land owner we are told that you can still see the original sections.
3: Corner
Stakes grade and Iron mountain road between warming shed and fence.
This is where they
turned north and travel 5 miles and left on to what we call Park
Creek road today. When asphalt end we look for another marker.
4: Corner
Park creek and Old Carson road left of park creek road right of old
Carson road about 200 yard north and west under pine tree “uneven
ground watch your step”. Watch for unwanted bugs and snakes.
5:
Continue down Park Creek and other 3 miles or so where trail splits
in several direction’s the marker is straight ahead. Around this
area is the waiting place for killed fellow travel on prerun mission
that never returned. They camped and waited for snow to melt here
for about a week or more depends who diary you read.
Leave
here stay right stay on main dirt road. About 10 miles you should
come onto asphalt Iron Mt. Road we will go left wait until all
arrive before leaving.
About
eight miles up Iron Mt. On left side is 49er tree be hard to spot.
6: walk
to only forest road closed for several reasons will by pass and go
to asphalt.
7:marker
seven is behind the historical 49er tree that has been scored
vandals over the years. A short trip up grade will give a good over
view of the canyon they had been traveling and you can still make
out the clearing where the trail was. In short distant the brush
gets to dense to drive, if you want to come back and walk mark you
information and return.
8:we have
not found but the trail lies right of the pavement and recrosses the
asphalt about eight miles up stay to the right on this road leave at
the Pillken Road sign on right side of pavement. About seven miles
of dirt road with a lot of water bar so take it slow and steady.
When asphalt is met go right “Note the trail can be seen on left of
road and then right crossing often the next several miles the rock
out cropping on the left you can still see wheel rut but with
degrading rock tend to cover them often.
9:approching this marker the wagon road can be noted at the first
curve on the left side of the road the route they used. Crossing the
cattle guard the first road to the right about 100 yards on the left
is the marker lots of parking space take time to look.
10: as
you round the hill on Iron Mt. road as the meadow appears the saw
grass and cabbage on both sides of the road the marker is right of
the first road to the left about 200 yard of asphalt.
This a
camp spot they spend several days in repairing wagons and gathering
stock that has been lost. They departed by road way seen in upper
right hand of the meadow where the trees are missing. They crossed
over the asphalt section and followed the crest of the hill to the
right of the roadway. After the big cut you can again see the trail
on the right side as it leaves the wooded area
11:
before stop sign on 88 on the left of the Iron Mt road before the
Resort sign is the tee post. Lot of parking stay of asphalt as much
as you can ”don’t run into the ditch”
Left on
88. Next stop is SHOT ROCK vista over look and potty break
Leave
here right on 88 and about 8 miles on left the Tragedy Springs road

first intersection go right until you see marker on the right at Mud
lake “lots of mosquitos get your bug spray out they will be with us
for the next few miles” We will be going on dusty road that are
rough take it easy.
We will
be passing Allen Ranch where and old barn is still standing a little
shakey by up.
From here the ground
is wet watch the spots and follow the rig ahead as to see where to
go the next few miles will have trail west marker in the tree as
well as other trails clubs. We will break out onto a ridge go left
the trail is single file and rocky we will go about two miles and
you can see the trail from Squaw ridge as it meanders up cover wagon
mt. We can go there with all the rigs so we will go as far as all
can go. Still it will give you the idea of the terrain they where
going over,
We have
to turn around here and head back out to 88 take it easy and we will
continue east at the highway we will miss 11 to 14 some are in the
wilderness area and some on the rougher trail ahead.
At 88 go
right a short distant and stop at over look so they came see where
they had gone and point out the mountain visible from here. Melissa
Cory Peak , Squaw Ridge, Covered wagon Peak, Thimble Peak.
Going 88
east to Cables Lake on west side midway a state marker on the right
just pass the maintain station tell of the trail crossing, give them
a short time an leave.
Stop at the crest for potty and information booth tell
them we only have twenty minute before we leave.
Stop at
Red Lake over look for ten minutes and we got to move to finish this
in time and move on to Hope valley at 88 and Hwy 89 turn right at
the turn out and the marker is on the right off the road. Plenty of
parking.
On Hwy 88
